The biggest and the most important festival in Hindu culture and a festival celebrated all over Nepal in each and every house. this festival is celebrated in the month of September or October and it is celebrated for 15 days. It starts from the bright lunar fortnight (Shukla Paksha) and ends on the day of the full moon (Poornima) according to the Nepalese annual calendar. This festival symbolizes a great conquest of the goddess Durga over the evil demons “Mahisasur”.

According to Hindu mythology, a demon named ‘Mahisasur’ who spread horror was killed by Goddess Durga the first nine-day of the festival represents the constant battle between them. And, the tenth day signifies the victory of good over evil.

The first day of the festival is known as Ghatasthapana, on this day, people plant barley seeds and are covered and worshiped for 10 days. On the seventh day also called ‘Phulpati’ or ‘Saptami’ is celebrated, the eight-day is called ‘Maha Ashtami’ this day, domestic animals like chicken, hens, buffalos, and goats are sacrificed to Goddess Kaliit can be observed around kali temples where a huge crowd is gathered to take their turn to sacrifice there offering in the temple and the head is used as an offering and rest of the body is taken back to the respective families to feast as ‘Prasad’ (holy food). Maha Navami is the ninth day of the festival, this day, craftsmen, mechanics, traders, etc worship their equipment and tools by sacrificing different animals and offering it to equipment showing their respect to there tools and praying to make them succeed and safe. The tenth day is the most important day named as Vijaya Dashami this day relatives of the family gather and younger ones in the family receive Tika (a mixture of yogurt, rice, and vermilion), Jamara (planted on the first day of Dashain), and blessings from elders as well as respected people and money.

Dashain is in fact the ceremony of reunion and fun. People living far away from home or homeland, revisit their home and get together with their families. Similarly, parents buy new clothes for their children. People enjoy eating lots of meats, alcohol, playing card, and especially younger ones love playing kites. usually, competitions are held for teens and kids to participate where they compete to be the last kite standing and the one who wins is given prizes and mainly good kite flying strings. Dashain is not just a festival it’s one of the countries biggest holiday .during this festival people cut bus, flight ticket one month prior and during these days the busy city of Kathmandu is almost empty as people who had migrated here from their homeland they go back and only people who are original from Kathmandu they stay back, the streets are less busy people kids play on the streets and Kathmandu city recovers from the busy schedule and is cleaner. this time of year visiting Kathmandu is highly referred.
