Useful Info

Permits and Regulations

Tsum Valley is part of a restricted area in Nepal, and a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is mandatory, along with the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP). These permits must be arranged through a registered Nepali trekking agency, and solo trekking is not allowed — a licensed guide is compulsory, and you must be in a group of at least two trekkers (excluding guide and porter).

Trekking Season

The best time to do the Tsum Valley trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer the clearest mountain views, stable weather, and dry trails. Winters can be harsh, and monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain, landslides, and leeches.

Difficulty Level

The trek is considered moderate, with daily walking hours ranging from 5 to 7 hours and gradual altitude gain up to around 3,700 meters. While it doesn’t include extremely high passes, the remote nature of the trail and basic amenities require trekkers to be in good physical health and mentally prepared.

Altitude Awareness

While the altitude is not extreme, acclimatization is still important. The itinerary is designed to allow a gradual gain, but trekkers should be aware of potential symptoms of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). Hydration, proper pacing, and good nutrition help in prevention.

Accommodation and Meals

Tsum Valley remains largely untouched by commercialization, so accommodation is in basic local teahouses with limited facilities. You’ll get traditional Nepali meals like dal bhat, noodles, soups, and occasionally Tibetan bread or momos. Options are simple but filling.

Connectivity and ATMs

There are no ATMs or card payment facilities after leaving Kathmandu. Make sure to carry sufficient cash (Nepali rupees). Mobile signal is limited or unavailable in many sections of the trek, and Wi-Fi is rare or non-existent beyond lower settlements.

Health and Safety

Basic medical facilities are not available in the valley. You should carry a personal first-aid kit and consult your doctor about altitude-related medications (e.g., Diamox). All trekkers must have comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency helicopter evacuation.

Transportation

The trek usually starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola via Arughat or Sotikhola. Roads can be rough and affected by weather. Be prepared for a long drive (up to 9–10 hours) on uneven terrain at the start and end of the trek.

Cultural Sensitivity

Tsum Valley is home to ethnic Tibetan communities who follow traditional Buddhist customs. Always ask before taking photos, dress modestly, walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls, and show respect at monasteries and sacred sites.
