Your journey begins with a scenic morning drive out of the Kathmandu Valley, passing rolling hills, small roadside settlements, and terraced farmland. The route follows the Trishuli River, cutting through deep gorges and pine-covered slopes, offering early glimpses of rural Nepalese life. Upon reaching Chokade, a charming hill village in Nuwakot, you’ll be welcomed in traditional Tamang style — with khada scarves, butter tea, and warm smiles.

Spend the afternoon exploring the village, interacting with locals, and learning about their deep-rooted customs, rituals, and spiritual practices. Dinner is a hearty Tamang feast made with organic, locally grown ingredients. This immersive homestay introduces you to the hospitality and authenticity of Nepal’s rural heartlands — a perfect start to your trek.

Cross the Trishuli River via a suspension bridge and follow a gentle uphill trail to reach Manegaon, a scenic Gurung village. This community is known for its craftsmanship, hospitality, and deep spiritual roots in Buddhism. After settling into your homestay, enjoy a traditional Gurung meal and try local millet beer called “tongba.” The cultural exchange, storytelling, and music around the fire make this evening unforgettable.

Useful Info

1. Best Season to Trek:
The ideal time is March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn). These months offer clear skies, blooming rhododendrons, and dry trails. Winter trekking is possible but requires extra preparation for cold nights, especially near the summit.

2. Altitude Awareness:
The trek reaches Phikuri Peak at 3,800m, so mild altitude symptoms may occur. The itinerary is designed with a gradual ascent, but staying hydrated and listening to your body is key.

3. Cultural Etiquette:
You’ll be staying in Tamang and Gurung villages. Always ask before photographing locals, remove shoes before entering homes, and avoid public displays of affection. A simple “Namaste” goes a long way in earning respect.

4. Mobile Connectivity & Electricity:
Network coverage is patchy beyond Betrawati. Expect limited or no connectivity in Bhalchhe and Phikuri Peak. Power is available in homestays, but bring a power bank for charging essentials during camping nights.

5. Water Safety:
Safe drinking water is provided throughout the trek. You can also bring a personal water purifier or LifeStraw bottle for added security and to reduce plastic waste.

6. Toilet Facilities:
Basic squat toilets are available in homestays. During the camping night, a portable or natural toilet will be used. Carry toilet paper and hand sanitizer at all times.

7. Tipping Guidelines:
Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. Suggested tip:

  • Guide: USD 5–10/day
  • Porter: USD 3–7/day
  • Homestay host (optional): A small cash gift or token souvenir

8. Trekking Insurance:
Make sure your travel insurance covers trekking up to 4,000m, including emergency evacuation. There are no health posts en route to Phikuri Peak.

9. Environmental Responsibility:
Avoid leaving any waste on the trail. Support community-based tourism by buying local products and using refillable water bottles. Holyland Adventure supports local conservation programs through this trek.

FAQs
  • Phikuri Peak is located in Nuwakot District, central Nepal, north of Kathmandu. It lies in the Ganesh Himal region, bordering Langtang National Park, and offers panoramic views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and Dorje Lakpa.

  • This trek is considered moderate. It’s suitable for fit beginners who can walk 5–7 hours a day. The trails are well-established, but the ascent to 3,800 meters on summit day can be physically demanding. Proper pacing and acclimatization help.

  • The trek starts in Chokade village, which is about a 6–7 hour drive from Kathmandu, via Trishuli and Betrawati. Private jeeps or local buses can reach Chokade. Holyland Adventure provides private transport with guides.

  • While it’s possible to do this trek independently, a local guide is strongly recommended due to unmarked forest trails, cultural sensitivity in villages, and the lack of teahouses beyond Bhalchhe. A guide also ensures safety and deeper cultural connection.

  • There’s a mild risk since the trek reaches 3,800 meters, but the itinerary allows a gradual ascent. Drinking plenty of water, ascending slowly, and taking breaks help prevent AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).

  • Yes, basic teahouses and homestays are available in villages like Chokade, Manegaon, and Bhalchhe. Camping is used near the summit of Phikuri Peak due to the remote nature of the final stretch.

  • Unlike more commercial routes, Phikuri Peak offers a raw, authentic trekking experience with cultural homestays, non-touristy trails, forest walks, and panoramic views — all in just 5 days. It’s ideal for travelers looking for a community-based and offbeat Himalayan experience.

  • You’ll stay with Tamang and Gurung families, experience traditional foods like millet bread and tongba, enjoy village welcome ceremonies, and possibly witness seasonal folk performances or local rituals.

  • Currently, no special permits are required for this trek, but you should carry your passport copy, travel insurance, and a trek registration document provided by your tour operator.

  • Yes, it’s safe for solo female trekkers, especially with a reputable local guide or group. Homestays are run by families, and communities are welcoming and respectful. Women travelers have had enriching, secure experiences here.
